I saw NIN last night at the Brixton Academy...
they rocked!!
I found another review of the album as well at roomthirteen.com
PornoVurt are a London 4-piece cashing in on the new wave of glam soaking the capital, but with rock n'roll aspirations that give their tunes substance and drive.
The intro track, titled 'Return of the Trash' begins with an atmospheric 2 minutes of storming, sweeping and crunching guitars before the fever-pitch vocals even emerge for a brief climax.
'On A Train' is a collision of sweeping sounds and lothario vocals that culminate in an overdriven, synthetic chorus. The lyrics comprise of about 50 words, but it doesn't seem to matter because by the time you realise this, the infectious tune is already caught in your mind. 'Mind' is far more butch with driving guitars fading in and out and relentless vocals; vocalist Mikey may wear eyeliner, but he's far from feminine, carrying a flame for harsh snarls that would make the likes of Vince Neil and Scott Weiland proud. Deliciously dark with lyrical references to cigarettes and gin , 'Moments' is brazen and sleazy, the verses are gorgeously tense and wind up perfectly but the chorus doesn't quite explode as much as expected and instead unfolds into a wide, crisp few moments of clean tone.
'A Thousand Fits' is quintessentially glam with lyrics such as "walks out like a glittered plaything" but still has a heavy, defiant tone that refuses to be categorised and protests almost enough to make it punk. 'Hermit', a piano-based tune is a welcome contrast, with singer Mikey's voice chiming like the elegant keys in a tune that shows PornoVurt aren't all about action and debauchery, but can create a quirky melody with poetic imagery.
Single 'Cold' is a real highlight, dark, harsh and almost utterly metal, but with more melody. The guitars are menacing and percussion driving you into this powerful piece. 'Vodkaville' continues with the edgy, leather-clad, transfixing rock with a real drive while tinny synths sprinkle a little glamour into the mix. 'One Of My Mornings' throbs with atmosphere and has the same ethereal tone as the intro track, deliciously creative.
This isn't an album that is going to take the charts by storm, but it should gain PornoVurt a substantial fanbase giving them the support needed to fortify their already promising sound.
must stop googling for myself and do somework!
