The 'vurt just got a weird review at rockmidgets.com...
Opening with a dirty guitar chord sequence from The Phantom of the Opera pleases me no end I do like a bit o' musical and the rest of the album seems, at first listen, to be theatrical enough to live up to this kind of introduction. It is, at times, a weird kind of sound, like it's been recorded in a room with very tight acoustics, and the vocals took me by surprise with regards to their pitch and surprisingly young protagonist, but its a good sound, especially when the synths kick in.
This band has tonnes of attitude, and a solid rhythmic rock behind them. I particularly like the slow build-up to and well-paced 'One Of My Mornings', and 'A Thousand Fits' has a lot of heart. My favourite has to be 'Hermit', though, with its surprisingly mature melody and lyrics, and brave set-up of just vocals over a piano which works despite everything you may think. 'On A Tram' could do with the vocalist being himself, with his own accent, rather than some weird whiny American-esque version of himself, but the song is okay. All of the songs are pretty okay, in fact! Wottalotta promise they 'ave.
