I like to think I'm an articulate person. However, once in a while, I pick up on some annoying verbal ruts I get myself in. For instance, I like to end a lot of sentences with the word "basically." I think I use that word when I don't know how to wrap something up. It really has nothing to do with the rest of the sentence. But, I continue to do it and remain oblivious until I read it or someone asks me why I continue to say it at the end of my sentences.

Another habit of mine is starting off sentences with "to be honest." Does that mean that every other thing I say isn't honest? Why would I preface any statement with "to be honest" unless it was some earth shattering, gut busting, Barbara Walters admission? I don't know. Since this has been brought to my attention, I've cringed every time I hear that fragment escape my lips.

Also, I read too much. I know no one thinks you can read too much, but I do. Why? Because when I talk to people, I use words you only find in books. I described my laugh as a guffaw to John once and he was deeply disturbed. No one uses that word outside of 10th grade English exercises. No one. Except me. In fact, John has dubbed me "the narrator." I don't talk like a human being. I talk like a book. Is this possibly part of why people think I'm standoffish? I meet them and they think "She couldn't possibly talk like this to people she's comfortable with." But, yes, I do. I'm weird. What can I say? Oh GOD! That's another one. I say "What can I say?" after every admission I make. I swear to God. I guess I'm human......basically. biggrin
