here's my unit's unofficial, official, motivational Video about our time in Afghanistan.
i put together the last half of the video, and 5 of those clips were filmed by me.
i've been a Marine for almost 5 years, and have been with 3/1 Weapons Company for 4 of those years. I've deployed three times. The first was to Iraq in 2007, the second was as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in the South Pacific, and the third obviously to Afghanistan.
Having been in so long now, with three deployments on my chest, puts me in a unique position to literally dictate what I do next in the Marine Corps. I can take the Instructor path (either at Basic Training or the School of Infantry), or be a Marine Security Guard in an overseas Embassy, or I can choose to stay with 3/1 Weapons for their next deployment to Afghanistan next Fall.
Whichever path I take will quite literally dictate how I live the rest of my Life.
I have no desire to be a Drill Instructor, but I know I would be plenty satisfied with myself as a Combat Instructor at the School of Infantry. That path would allow me to stay Stateside for the next several years, allowing me to pursue some kind of social life in the civilian world.
If I take the Embassy route, I'll be able to travel to more exotic locations around the world. And who wouldnt love to travel around with minimal expenses??
And if I stay with 3/1, I'll be risking life and limb once more on another tough deployment to Afghanistan.
Sooo... yeah... I have some thinking to do.
But I will say this... I've been Stateside for a full week now. That first weekend I partied hard. Drank a lot. Went out with friends. Even got laid by some random chick. It was a good time all around..... but to be perfectly honest, if I was asked to, I would return to Afghanistan as soon as tomorrow. No hesistation.
There are still other Marine units in Afghanistan, and I know they need combat replacements. So it wouldnt be out of the ordinary....
Dont get me wrong, it sucked being over there... its just... I dont know....
I'll obviously think a bout it over the the winter leave block... but... I'm leaning heavily towards going back.
