I found a penny today.
When I found it, the first thing that ran through my mind was my father. He was the person who first told me that if you found a penny, it could be a sign of good luck.
My parents divorced when I was a small boy. After the divorce, I moved to Puerto Rico with my mother, where we lived together for several years. My father, on the other hand, stayed in Germany. He was posted there with the Army, so I didn't see much of him for those first few years. I remember I must have been like ten years old when he finally came to visit me one summer. I didn't remember much about him, which made it really awkward having to spend time with some giant of a man I barely knew.
I don't remember where we were going, but he and I were walking somewhere. It had been raining during most of the day and there were puddles of water everywhere. In one of the puddles I saw a penny, and for a ten year old boy, those pennies start to add up. So I put it in my pocket and kept on walking. My father must have seen it too, but he didn't say anything. Then after a long while of us walking in silence, he finally asked me if I found it heads up or heads down. I said I wasn't sure. He told me that whenever I see a penny lying face up on the ground, I should keep it because it will bring me good luck. We continued walking in silence.
Now I'm 28 years old. It's been years since I've seen my father. He's still in the Army, getting ready for his next deployment.
The penny I found today was sitting on the seat of my bike. The previous night, I had left my bike locked to the parking meter in front of my apartment building. I thought that was a pretty odd place for a penny to be, so I put it in my pocket and went about my day.
It was heads up.
