i kind of hate the santa anas. i am not a warm-weather girl and the temperature here has been in the high 20s for the past few days. today it's 28C. FRICKING' 28! i know it's bad form to complain about warm weather, but i don't like it this hot. not only is it hot, but it's sooo dry. i have terrible skin so the low humidity (last time it got to single-digit humidity but today it's around 20%) makes me itch so much.

i was researching the santa anas today and i found out they're exactly the same thing as chinooks, which comforts me in an odd way. i love chinooks! it's always dry in calgary so it never mattered when the hot, dry wind swept down, and chinooks are most noticeable in the winter and then they're so welcome. i'd see a chinook arch on the west horizon and get so happy, knowing in a few hours i could unzip my winter coat and the wind would pull me and catch in every bit of my coat and rip my hair around (rin-formation: i love the feeling of the wind in my hair. it's one reason i keep growing it out).

for your viewing pleasure, i present photographic evidence.

in case you don't know what chinooks/santa anas are about, here is a handy piece of information lifted from wikipedia:

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

fhn wind: when a deep layer of prevailing wind is forced over a mountain range (Orographic lifting). As the wind moves upslope, it expands and cools, causing water vapor to precipitate out. This dehydrated air then passes over the crest and begins to move downslope. As the wind descends to lower levels on the leeward side of the mountains, the air temperature increases adiabatically as it comes under greater atmospheric pressure creating strong, gusty, warm and dry winds. Fhn winds can raise temperatures by as much as 30C (54F) in just a matter of hours.

my laptop will be full-powered again as of tonight, which bodes well for me starting to work with models again. it's been about a month since my last shoot. yikes!

the orange cat bros. (as i have dubbed henry and pepin) are getting along pretty well. henry likes to lick pepin's head and they run around the house driving mr. rin crazy. i like it, though. ever since we got pepin, henry has stopped following me around meowing.

i'm about to head out to see _mike_ to drop off some long-overdue goodies. i'm going to seek out some tea downtown (though i didn't expect it to be so hot, so it may have to be iced tea) and hopefully take some photos. non-californians: can you believe the malls here have no roofs? inconceivable! it is so hard to wrap my head around.

i want to post more photos but can't since all mine are stuck on my laptop, so here are some shots of my favourite meteorological phenomenon. i would like you all to tell me what your favourites are, if you have any. if you are not a huge geek like me maybe make something up!

parhelion (commonly known as a sundog):

aurora borealis!! this shot was taken by someone in my hometown. i know the aurora gets prettier than this but i wanted to show you how i have seen it most.

i am looking at lists oh phenomena and it's so hard to narrow down. i love the way the sky looks. i have to go get my day on because mike will beat me up if i don't bring him his fudge today. also i will actually start replying to comments tonight because i'll be off of computer-sharing mode. yayyy!!!
