I have a version of "Send In The Clowns" sung by Frank Sinatra accompanied only by a piano. I think it might just be the saddest song I've ever heard. There's an elegance to the discovery of love just as it's given up that is heartbreaking.
The other two songs I've always had in the running for saddest song are "hurt" by nin (the Cash version is sad, but for reason that seem external to the song) and "Yesterday" by the Beatles (a song that always gives me pause, regardless of what I'm doing when it comes on).
What's the saddest song you've ever heard?

I can kind of see "creep" by radiohead, but I always thought that was angry sarcastic angst more than sorrow.
