Okay, so I'm back.

Sorry I've been away so long. Did I sort out what needed sorting out? Not really. Do I have a good reason for being gone? Probably, but it's none of your business.

But hell, I was bored without you guys.

While I've been gone, there's been some excitement (both good and bad).

I've had some interest from a couple of the...

Seattle or New York, eh? nice dichotomy, there. it makes the choosing that much more dramatic.

Boy, if you all had a nickel for every time I've said, "I'm not sure where yet, but I'll be moving away from Chicago sometime soon."

Well, I finally took my first step towards figuring out where and when. I sent my CV (kind of like an academic resume for those who don't know) to three labs. We'll see if/when I hear back from them....

Okay. My taxes are done. I'm going to Nebraska for the weekend. There's leftovers in the fridge and pizza money in the bowl by the front door for Saturday night. I hung all the emergency numbers by the phone.

You can have friends over if you want, but no more than two at a time. No parties and no boys!!!

Okay, sweetie. Give me a...

I love my neighborhood part I.

Okay, I've been slagging on my neighborhood long enough. It's really not the ghetto.

This morning my whole block smelled like magnolias. How bad could my neighborhood really be?

Yes I have now rededicated my life to Jesus. Hallelujah! biggrin The show tonight went well considering all things. There was only like 20 people there but it was fun... Indeed Florida, and Gainesville in particular, has some interesting characters to say the least. surreal

...and as mysteriously as it shrank, my friends list is back up to its normal number.

I know I promised pictures, but I'm kind of lazy. Actually I'm not lazy right now. That's the problem. If I were lazy, I'd take the time in lab to not work and scan pictures in. Perhaps I'll be lazy tomorrow.

I made chicken artichoke stew last night, and...

Yep, that's Little Wooden Boy from The Tick.

I do specimen resolution for Specialty Laboratories. It's basicly troubleshooting for any specimens that are missing, or received with problems. It's a cool job, excpet that I work night shift.

So did you get your Phd while I wasn't paying attention?

What the hell is up with my neighborhood part III.

I was walking through Jackson Park this afternoon around 2:30. I was doing a little birdwatching. It is Spring migration, after all, and Jackson Park is one of the best spots. I was just about to enter the area called the "Rose Garden." I put that in quotes because I don't think there's been a...

so when will you know about your post-doc? i'm not really sure how that whole process works...

Thanks for the well wishes on my thesis! As far as I'm concerned, the hard part is over (ie, the writing). I'm not too worried about the defense, but I still have to do it. frown

>The day after, I woke up with this sinking feeling that I had something to do, or somewhere to be.

I felt the exact same way the morning after I handed in my thesis to my committee. I still haven't made it to the totally relaxed part yet, but hopefully after I defend I can brief a big sigh of relief. But then its right off to the postdoc (I'm such a masochist) ...

What the hell is up with my neighborhood? Apparently, since January 31st, there's been a series of about 40 attacks in which men (like me) walking alone (like I often do) were beaten up and occasionally robbed by groups of teenagers. They've arrested a bunch of people involved, but there's plenty more out there.

Most of the attacks have happened on weekdays between 11 AM...

tequilaraymax:
He he. Not in the face.

Seriously though - where I live, a few years back, there was a spate of random attacks on people. You'd read about it in the news, and almost every other day there'd be something else.

The worst I heard was a guy was out jogging, a car pulled up, men got out, bundled the jogger into the car, slashed him up pretty bad with razor blades, and dumped him out. Nasty. No reason. They didn't even rob him. Nor were they known to him. Of course, reading that in the news, it's probably only half the story.

Anyway, around the same time, a friend of mine got punched in the face, just randomly again, by one of two guys he past coming round a corner on the street he lived on. Thing is, my friend had some weakness in his jaw to begin with, so the hit actually broke his jaw in three places. He had to have it wired up and couldn't eat properly for weeks.

Not that I want to nurture any fears you might already have. Yeah, actually, sorry about those stories.

I've been thinking about my relationship with my girlfriend a lot lately. I've come to the conclusion that, ever since I found out she was moving far away for school, I've been waiting for us to break up.

I decided that's not a good way to continue. It's making me unhappy and it's making her unhappy. That gave me two options: break up with her,...

Long distance relationships are really hard to keep. But love is always worth it.

i used to sit around and make myself upset expect for my boy to break up with me, like it was going to happen any day.
but then i realized that he wouldnt do that, that i was just being irrational b/c i thought i wasnt worthy of his affection.
the second you put a period on something is when its destined to end.
good luck, darling.

I love that I can still be thrilled at how startlingly nice some people are, and how little effort it takes to be startlingly nice to other people.

I've also been thinking about holy water a lot. I'm one of those crazy Cath-o-lics. At church on Easter, they had little plastic bottles of holy water for the taking. I grabbed one, just in case a...
