I'm not much of a drinker (not much meaning not at all) so I don't find myself in the company of drunks very much--and I don't mean drunks as in "anyone who drinks," because I'm far from the non-drinking type who looks down on or tsk-tsks those who do choose to indulge in the alcoholic beverage. I mean drunks as in the folks lurchind down the sidewalk, enveloped in a cloud of foul, laying facedown in their own vomit, making asses of themselves, all that. While I do spend time with Those Who Drink, I don't see People Who Are Drunk very often.

Last night I had my first scary-drunk encounter. I was walking home with a friend and it was sometime around midnight (midnight on a Monday mind you, so not exactly a hopping weekend. okay, it was cinco de mayo, so mayhap that had something to do with it. still.) and we could see two dudes walking down the sidewalk in our direction. They were being kind of stereotypical tipsy, walking all over the pavement, waving their arms about, talking quite loudly. We tried to stick together and squeeze by them, but we ended up having to split up and walk on either side of one of the men--our parties were staggered, actually. From the edge of the sidewalk nearest the street the passing order was drunk guy #1, me, drunk guy #2, friend.

As I cleared my drunk-sandwich I looked over my shoulder to make sure my friend was still keeping up. I turned to see drunk guy #2 not allowing her to pass, pressing her against the wall of a building actually. I've never been the to-the-rescue type or anything like that--I've never been in a fight and I'm rather looking forward to keeping that streak going; and the Pal is a take-care-of-herself type (and I don't mean likes to, I mean *can*). But there I was, grabbing #2 by the shoulder, and yelling in my best man-voice as I tried to pull him away from her. I didn't do much good, as she was already shoving him away--he tripped over my foot and stumbled backwards.

Loyal Friend and myself made a hasty retreat while #2 yelled obscenities at us. It kind of shook me up.

I've done many a stupid drunken thing myself - I'm probably the type of guy that people used to want to avoid. Oddly enough, I can't seem to drink as much as I used to. My tolerance is still what it used to be, but can't fit the drinks!! I.E. I used to drink 7 or 8 beers in a row without thinking about it, but not I feel full on two or three. Stomach bulging kind of full.
