Tim McGraw.

The name drifts in over the darkness of my memory. I've been a fan for longer than I have conscious memory; no, that isn't true. Let's just say that for as long as my life has mattered, I have been a fan of "Samuel" Tim McGraw. But the story of how I met (in the musical sense) Tim isn't as important as the one I will tell you now.

My freshman year of college I moved away from home. Lots of people can say the same, true, but for me it was an earth-shattering experience. I was the big dog in high school, on the football team, a member of prom court, everything. After graduation I just wanted to go to work on the family farm, but my mom had talked my dad into sending me away to college for a year. I don't think she knew, but he told me if I didn't like it I could come back to the farm after a year; I agreed, for my mother's sake. I moved to the big city, to Columbus, Ohio.

No one knew me there.

I wasn't good enough to play football for OSU, and everyone knows things like prom court were just popularity contests. And you can't win popularity contests when no one knows your name, so I was stuck. I had never been very smart, so I was never going to be known for my grades. I was ready to pack it in and move home early, before my first semester was even over. But then I thought about Tim, and I wondered what he would do. I decided to take a cue from my main man.

I grew a moustache just like Tim's. There was no one else on campus with a moustache quite like that, with such perfect ninety degree angles. I heard there was a bartender off-campus who had one similar, but it was at the kind of bar I didn't go to, so I never saw it with my own eyes. The point is, it made me stand out. Some people started calling me Tex, Tex McGraw. I liked that a lot.

I was invited to parties. I made out with girls. They laughed at my moustache, but they still called me Tex, and they still liked to feel it. They asked to wear my cowboy hat, and sometimes I let them.

Four fast years later I had a communications degree and I've never been back to the farm. Thank you so much, Tim McGraw. You changed my life.
