As I've been boycotting the Oscars ever since Willem Dafoe lost for his performance in SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE, I spent the evening watching the director's cut of CINEMA PARADISO.
It's a big winner in my opinion. It's sentimental, it's about movies, it has large moustaches, and it features a tragic love story. And, as it's set in Italy, there are lots of Italian girls running around. Italian girls remind me of a certain gal I still have an uber-crush on.
I go through the same thing every time I start to watch subtitle movies--before I start it I can't fathom reading my way through the whole movie. It robs me of the option to rub my eyes, look around the room, run to the kitchen for a nice refreshing beverage . . . I'm going to have to keep my eyes on the screen for the entire flick if I want to keep up on what's happening. But then, after a few minutes of watching, I can't tear myself away anyway.
I wasn't too crazy about the music, but the film is really, really good. I saw THE PIANIST a few days ago, and that's another excellent one.
