Do you remember the kids in second grade who could flip their eyelids up? For me it was Josh Kirkham. He would take his big, square glasses off, crack his knuckles, and flip them up one at a time. It looked like they were inside out, with the pink showing, and he would stare straight ahead like a zombie, or sometimes roll his eyes up...

The City Comes Alive!
(Like Peter Frampton, only with less Rock.)
Today counts as spring. I wore a jacket and realized I didn't really need to . . . I sat in the park and the sun was hot (hot!) . . . I walked around downtown and didn't have to rush to the nearest train stop before the onset of frostbite (because, and you...

ps: I just read your fantasy. It's lovely, and reminds me of another nice Welles reference which I'll share with you at some future gathering.

Yup thats where I got cakelike from =^_^=
As I've been boycotting the Oscars ever since Willem Dafoe lost for his performance in SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE, I spent the evening watching the director's cut of CINEMA PARADISO.
It's a big winner in my opinion. It's sentimental, it's about movies, it has large moustaches, and it features a tragic love story. And, as it's set in Italy, there are lots of Italian girls...

"Are those steel-toed"
"Hm?"
"Your boots, are those steel-toed?"
She looked down at her shoes and wiggled her toes. It was visible through the black leather of her boots. "Oh, no. They're just Doc's."
"Oh."
"Yeah, I don't kick people very much. So."
The boy coughed and ran his hands through his hair. He didn't say anything for a moment, but he knew if he...

Welcome to SGChicago. If you didn't see the "throwing rocks" thread, some of us are bowling at Diversey on Monday evening.

So you're not bold enough to talk to girls on the train either?
Bowling: oak, dollface, ReiToei, and pilar said they'll be there, along with a couple of new folks. If you meant that you're concerned about finding the group, my hair should be a good beacon.

I couldn't make it to the protests that shut down Lake Shore Drive on Thursday, but there are protests planned all day Friday. So if my mom calls, that's where I'll be.
Thoughts on The Princess and the Warrior:
It is surprisingly better than Run Lola Run; "Steinie" looks like Willem Dafoe, Jr.; saying things like "She was hit by der truck," "It is time for der sexing," or "she is with der neckhole" while watching a German movie is always, always funny; patchy beards are never attractive; German security guards are easily disarmed.
See this movie.

Last night watched "In the Heat of the Night" with Sidney Poitier...good stuff!! I picture your story from your last entry being drawn by a Klaus Janson or Frank Miller type - gritty and very cinematic...
Waiting for the station for the train to come. It's St. Patrick's Day and the war starts in less than two days, but no one seems to mind. They're too busy dancing on the sidewalk and singing along to "Come On Eileen."

Really liked your entry today - oddly enough, I thought it would make a very good script for a short comic story. Reminded me of Harvey Pekar's work. Some moments of genuine oddness and humor, and an almost philosphical and lyrical last paragraph. I don't think it will be long before you get some other characters checking out your journal...

I love your writing.... it's all fiction the morning after isn't it?
There's a boy named Jack and he's eight years old. His father came home from the hospital today with Jack's new sister Alice; Jack's mom didn't come with them. Jack's mom is never coming home from the hospital. Jack is sad and angry at the same time, and he's got no outlet for this except for the new little girl who lives in his house...

Well, this is dammed intriguing reading even without the visuals. Hope you don't mind, I'm adding you to my friends list so that I can be reminded to check out your journal entries and see what you've got in the mix...
I know a lot of people who work with their televisions on. I couldn't imagine doing that--I go days without turning my tv on just because it tends to suck me in. I haven't had cable in years, except for one brief period when I moved into a new apartment and the previous tenant's cable hadn't been turned off yet. I actually found myself watching...

I often work to music as well - it helps me get into a groove. Read your journal entry about Comic readers a couple of days ago and you're right, most readers are a bunch of angry nerds. I'd highly recommend Dan Clowes "Dan Pussey" strips - but if you know who James Kochalka is, you've proabably read all the Eightballs! Rest assured there are those of us out there who are more sophisticated readers who are more interested in good storytelling than in if Green Lantern changed his costume again...ha...

I was taken to Medieval Times . . . I feel like I was bought tickets to a little kid's movie and had to act like it was genuinely gripping and action-packed. I had a good time overall, but I think it's funnier to go to Medieval Times in theory than it is in practice.

I've been thinking about comics a lot lately. I'm at a point where I'm writing three different books for three different artists, and as we creep closer to publication with each of them I'm wandering onto more and more comic book related message boards.
And I'm suddenly reminded that, while I love comics, I hate most of the people who read them.
I've never seen...

I had the best train ride home tonight--it's 1.30 in the morning and the driver had to stop the el, walk out on the tracks, and chase two drunk dudes away. They jumped onto a rooftop and escaped.
