This journal goes out to Nathan Franz:
It has been 10 years since Nate left that message. I have always applauded his blatant disregard of the accepted rules of where to write one's name. He was there on that particular day and couldn't give a damn who knew it. I have always imagined him in and out of the shadows, lurking just out of sight, instrument of pencraft clutched tightly in his hand. Perhaps I am wrong. Surely such a free spirit would not feel the need to hide like a scared animal. I like the idea of him holding his head up high with whiteout pen in hand, knowing exacting what to scribe. No first name only for him. No sir! First and last name! "Nathan FRANZ was here!" The uncompromising use of "wuz" speaks volumes in defense of this.
I don't know what made him choose that particular spot. One has to ask if it was planned in advance with months of preparation or maybe it was purely a whim and the right moment simply presented itself.Iti's quite possible that it is not for us to know. The answer may be so deep, so bold, that we could never understand its intricacies.
Oh where are you now, Nathan Franz? Are you still here? Is your name on different telephone poles in places we have only read about in books or seen on t.v.? Wherever you are, your seemingly simple gesture is an inspiration to us all. Ten years of rain, wind, sun and perhaps a scrapping device could not silence you. Your message is eternal.
Take care, my friend and Godspeed..
