i didnt do my tax return last year cos i was going to have to pay $400 and i figured i would wait till next year (now) when i would come out in front (i did etax just to get an idea and it says i am entitled for $700ish back).
what i didnt realise is there is fines or late fees... if the tax office hasnt gone after me or contacted me, will these fines/fees apply to me?
is it better to go to an accountant and do both at the same time? would it be better to get someone else to do it? or should I try doing it myself? is that even possible?

I don't think you can do your 2009 return via e-tax anymore. So you will need to either go to an accountant or do it via paper. I should have a tax pack somewhere maybe for 2009, or could always check if you can still get them from the ATO.
The ATO won't contact you. I just had to do 5 years worth of returns for a client.
If you can get a refund for your 2009 return, you may not get hit with the late lodgment penalty. H & R Block or places like that are going to be cheaper but not sure how much help there are when wanting assistance on deductions. I have never used them. I am assuming you have just the one job, and you will have a group certificate. You should be able to claim laundry cause you have a work uniform, do you have to wear certain shoes at all?? Also last year weren't you doing shifts at two different stores?? I am happy to have a look at your stuff, and then do up a comparison schedule for you like I did with Nic, and then you can see what position you are in and can take all your stuff into a cheaper accountant and get them to lodge it.
