I ended up seeing Jarhead on Tuesday, the day we refer to as Cheap Night. The theater was packed, but mostly because there were slim pickins' as far as movies when this week... I've been reading reviews and articles about Jarhead shooting itself in the foot since it's portrayed in the trailers as a war movie's war movie, when it is in fact the war movie that isn't about war at all. I can see why some people were audibly annoyed at the endof the movie...
Anyway, if you go into the theater expecting something like Blackhawk Down, you'll be very disappointed. I did like it, however, and especially enjoyed Peter Sarsgaard's performance.
Had to give another presentation at the main reserve last weekend. It was about a contentious issue that I won't get into here, but I was worried that it'd turn into a screaming match between the various parties involved. It didn't happen like that and a quick resolution was found and moved, seconded and accepted pretty quick.
I was quite relieved since things went as I hoped they would.
Being the "good Canadian kid" that I am, I went out and bought "Hipeponymous" -- a collection of The Tragically Hip's hit singles on two CDs, a live concert and all of the music videos on two DVDs. Though I own all of the Hip's albums, it's convenient for driving and such. Plus, it was amusing to see how horrible some of their early videos were. They're much better now, I think.
My brother crashed my 1987 Ford Ranger again. This makes the third time, and I still let the little bastard drive the damn thing now. He clipped the front left fender of some other car with the back right bumper while driving too fast and putting himself in precarious positions. There are bad drivers in British Columbia, very bad drivers. Everyone I've met from outside the province has told me this, and I'm starting to believe it.
At best, I'm a middling driver. In fact, I've yet to parallel park more than twice a year due to avoiding them like the plague. My reaction time and general road savviness increased quite a bit when I got a job as a dish pig and delivery driver for a local Chinese food restaurant. My Pop had a lot to do with my driving ethic now, too. "Slow down a bit, and always check your blindspots, but most importantly, take a step back and pay attention." Since I've started actively driving,* I've been noticing very bad things happening on our avenues, roads and highways.
In case I forget, Rememberance Day is nigh. I thought I'd mention it because it's the only holiday I really view as one of solemn reflection. As a weird little kid, I grew up watching those stodgy old British war documentaries about the First and Second World Wars. This continued as an obsession during my throughout my middle and secondary school days. I guess Rememberance Day is one of the few holidays that feels important in my currently-jaded phase of being, and I appreciate that.
What's it called in the States? Veterans' Day? Is it any different from Memorial Day? *fires up Wikipedia.org*
Anyway, the lack of updates made me want to update. Not much to report insofar as personally important stuff, but at least it shows that I still exist and am putting in an effort (however small, I guess).
Later.
* Have you ever remembered getting in your car and then getting out at your destination, not remembering how you got there exactly? I used to do this all the time, and this isn't exactly actively driving. This is zombie driving: somewhere between lucidity and semi-consciousness. It's been slow going, but I've been trying to actively drive and pay attention. I've been predicting and avoiding potentially bad situations with great reliability nowadays.
