It has become a war between them and me.
I sit at my computer at night, no headphones... no sounds. I listen carefully until I hear that familiar "skritch skritch skritch...." Then I wait. No typing. No movement. No breath. The only sound in the apt is the delicate hum of the refrigerator and the muffled dulcet tones of mariachi music drifting down from an upstairs neighbor.
I know where they come in. I know where they run. I realize my opportunity is small, and I must be faster than they are. There is only one stretch of exposed wall along their path, and if I'm not quick, they win. They never expect it though. They live their daily lives in fear of being hunted, yet didn't see me as a threat before.
But now... I'm ready. I'm patient. I'm armed.
The first few have fallen. Their bodies carelessly tossed out the window into the courtyard below... It's a warning to those who think they can get in.
