I have not seen Elephant. I was intrigued and repulsed by the reviews I read. Perhaps I should give it a go?

The 'sight' is a lesser thing without your bad self, Mr Mnage. Come back to the fold, you know you want to...

Your page is an interesting yardstick for me, cos it allows me to see how frequently I have an opportunity to visit every name on my friends list.
About every month and a half, by the looks of things.

the chaotic gods were overseeing my move ......... it was a 5-day disaster. during the course of which I managed to wrap a u-haul around a telephone pole. an amazing feat - even for me.

it was as if all the negative energy built up from 4 years of careless, reckless living in that sleepy college town finally came to roost ........ lashed out, and...

One is not forced to read the Genealogy of Morals, Sir, one is compelled...

As for Emily Dickinson:
'I'd rather recollect a setting
Than own a rising sun
Though one is beautiful forgetting
And true the other one'

I've actually never read any Emily Dickinson, and got this quote out of a book on Jean-Luc Godard. Do you have a favourite Dickinson verse?

I feel kind of bashful asking this, but hey, maybe we should be Friends or something...

Thanks so much for your description of the crab boat - you're really painting a picture. But, question:

'neoprene braces on our forearms to keep our tendons together'

- what, your tendons were in danger of... coming apart???

And you were working 16 hours a day? Jesus. Sounds a bit like my job! tongue tongue tongue

But don't worry about telling me your life story - that's what I'm here for. wink
Where did you go in Alaska, when you went back to be a coast guard? How come you left? I see you're now in Maine, is that like the civilised alternative to Alaska?

I've never been (to Alaska; I have actually been to Maine: there's a photo of me somewhere at the Eastern most point of the USA) - it's a fantasy, but a treasured one.

These stories get better! - 'the toughest bar in the world' tongue

Have you read Drop City by T.C. Boyle? It's about this hippy community from California in the late sixties who get moved on by the police (or should I say, the Man) and decide to move to Alaska. It's great, and full of stories a bit like yours. Plus, despite being kind of a satire on hippy ideals and that whole era, it also has a real sympathy for its characters and a healthy sense of what was good and valuable about that time/those people. Beautifully written as well ~ thoroughly recommended, what!

I just finished reading Margaret Atwood's latest book Oryx & Crake.

A dark dystopian fable that is deeply critical of western civilization - in which dramatic climactic changes cause nations to dissolve and corporations to takeover

brilliant - fragmented - and...

I am in awe of your Alaskan crab-catcher escapades. In awe. Would you like to describe in minute detail how you butchered these crabs? I'm not really a crustacea-sadist, I'm just trying to picture it. What did it smell like? Were there any women on board?

I like your approach to 'borrowing' books from Borders. This is the only way to treat multinationals: with contempt. That's how they treat us, so we should return it in kind.

Interesting choice of actors, although I'm afraid to say I've always had a bit of a problem with both Peter Sellers and Catherine Deneuve (for different reasons, obviously). Seems we really can't agree about the movies! blush
