Me again..
Wow, this past weekend and the days following were the strangest ever! Switzerland voted for a law that will prohibit the construction of new minaret's on mosque's. The whole vote was one political drama that started months ago with the conservative party advertising with posters that showed a mantled woman and rockets in the shape of minarets. Just sick! The whole debate wasn't about the minaret's but more about "islamisation", islamic terrorists and burka's.
I must say, that I was, and still are a bit ashamed about the result. It shows that Switzerland is a country of rednecks and hillbillies! Everyone says how open and liberal swiss people are but when those people go home, it seems that they turn into these conservative and backwarded folk.
The picture that people in foreign countries get about switzerland really freaks me out and scares me to a certain point. We get compliments from the most conservative parties from Germany (NPD), France (Front Nationale) etc. Those aren't the compliments you wanna get...
They get the impression that swiss are racists and that foreigners aren't welcome. FUCK THAT! Switzerland was built with the help from italin workers, is getting cleaned up by facility cleaners from eastern europe and ex-jugoslavia, and all the management positions? They're covered by english, american or german staff, simply because there's not enough swiss who will qualify (or don't want to qualify) for the job.
So I tell all those friggin rednecks: be proud to be swiss, but acknowledge what all the foreigners have done for this country AND that there is something like freedom of religion in this country! So, fuck all the right wing and wanna-be-super-christians.
