College improved my writing skills, but killed my writing. My grades and therefore my future came to depend on being creative on a deadline. Pressure. Stress. I often couldn't write the entire time the assignment was due till the night before, and then stayed up for the next 24 hours, even skipping all other classes, just to produce something wholesale out of nothing and clean it up in enough time to turn it in. And I had to keep setting my sights higher and higher to outperform my fellow students, till anything I wrote that fell short of Shakespeare became trash. By my senior year I was burnt out on writing altogether, and never fully recovered. And the sad thing is, nearly the only time I can write now is if there is some sort of deadline involved...
