Okay, so I've been a little scarce. It's work. You know, the standard - shifting deadlines, huge pressure, and to make things more interesting Mr. Bond, let's have one co-worker leave for a new life in London, and another get called for jury duty!

So I'm pretty much collapsing into bed every night.

You know, I really had hopes that we would get some political unity in the United States, for once.

Didn't really go out for New Years, as it happened I had someone tied up. Apologies if I missed raucous holiday parties.

In other news, I'm volunteering for Barack Obama. I try not to wear my politics on my sleeve, but it's going to be taking up some significant time in the near future, so I figured I should mention it.

Happy/Merry/Woeful [insert the name of whatever winter holiday your particular denomination, belief system, or rational humanist doctrine might be, here].

I shall, for the first time, be staying in the Bay Area for the holidays, and will be cooking a large vegetarian Christmas meal (thank God for Quorn turkey loaf.)

Just in from the good news department: My mom is home and doing well.

Well, I fully intended to see everybody last night, but there was this really top shelf absinthe at the first party.... say no more. No really, say no more. I've got lawyers.

Now I'm off to the hinterlands to celebrate my spawning day. I briefly considered a big party, but with all the holiday events already going on, it seems better to keep it simple....

I'm not saying this to brag, but I' think I'm a fairly accomplished cook. I'm usually in charge of the cooking come holiday time, I've been known to whip up some excellent meals out of random ingredients found in somebody else's kitchen.

So somebody tell me, why oh why can't I bake worth a damn?

The Mom Unit is out of ICU, sipping broth and calling to ask me which movies to watch. Things are well.

I, on the other hand, am sick as a dirty wet dog. Apparently my immune system is everybody's bitch. Yes, rhinoviruses, I'm looking at you.

I'm back and at work in San Francisco, after my extended trip East. My mother's surgery went well, although I won't really feel secure until she is out of the ICU.

I expect to be madly busy over the next few weeks.
