Dim Red Light

the morning
early morning homecoming after too-long movie night too far away. rest stop naps not nearly so satisfying as soft bed at home, or warm, so teeth-chattering wakefulness enforced traveling toward destination. highway turns to street as sun explodes slowly, sending fire down the pavement as blinding light turns the corner toward shadow. home in sight, motor idle then off, opening doors chills even more, shivers as keys are found through stumbling bleary-eyed walking. fumbling with blinds and buttons, weariness falls toward unconsciousness, and naked goosebumps are soothed by layers of blankets to skin-on-skin calm. in the dim red curtain light of dawn, we sleep.

wakefulness
awake, light still dim and red, reaching for clock and wondering. morning gone with shivers and exhaustion, ready for another day, but tired. search for occupation...
