Spring is Coming at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

The migratory birds are moving on from the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge and despite the cold on Friday there has been a general warming trend marking the coming of spring. With that, the alligators and turtles were more prevalent on my most recent trip to the Savannah NWR. First up are a couple of Anhingas (female in top photo, male in bottom photo)

Next up are a pair of Blue Winged Teal (top) and a pair of Northern Shovelers (bottom). The males are the more colorful and the females are more subdued. Both of these pairs weren't too far from each other just near the edge of the water; I stayed in the car and took these photos to keep from spooking them and making them fly off.

The photos below are of a juvenile Little Blue Heron (still all white) and a Great Blue Heron in flight. I didn't see the Great Blue Heron until it took off and I think it surprised me more than I surprised it!

Finally, here are some of the alligators and turtles I saw on this trip. As the temperatures get warmer, sightings of both will increase and it won't be a surprise to see 20-30 or more alligators along the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive (and you'll see even more if you get out and walk the trails along the way).
