oof.

cmj has its high points and low points. i personally think it's gone downhill over the last few years, but maybe i'm jaded.

tonight at the place i work, gail ann dorsey, the bass player for david bowie played. it was nice; she did a solo singer-songwriter thing, and though her songs didn't blow me away entirely, there were some good, brilliant moments. an added bonus was Bowie was there. and he just fills up the room. he was all incognito wearing a baseball cap and was sporting a beautifully groomed mustache which i'm still convinced may have been a wonderful disguise. She sang "ziggy stardust " as her encore, and with him singing along, from his table, it was enough to make me record it in my brain as a special, unforgettable moment.

after that, the whole night went downhill. at our venue, 7 hip hop "artists" played, who went on 2 1/2 hours late! none were even remarkable, the last of which whose final song in the showcase's lyrics were "michael jackson fucked those kids". nobody was happy to be there: the artists, the few people who trickled in and didn't drink (which pays my bills), the staff, and the promoters who couldn't understand why nobody was there. i truly felt like i was at a marathon open mike show.

we went from high to the ultimate low tonight in talent, and it just makes me wonder. on a regular night at my venue, i know i'll at least see one thing good that i haven't seen before. tonight, i saw everything horrible that i've seen a million times.

at least i can say that Bowie was there. and he was cool.

ARRR!!!

am i to infer that the correct question involved "WHO" instead of "what"?
