i went to d.c. for my cousin's wedding this weekend. my parents live there, and my dad picked me up at the train station. driving home, he pointed out this neighbor of his who was doing all of these ostentatious additions to his home: swimming pool, a new wing, a fuckin' swiss-family robinson treehouse, or "deck" which was hanging off the back of the house and meandered down the hill in back with a gazebo or some shit.
saturday morning i woke up to chaos on the street. the new house at thge end of the street exploded...there was nothing left but a smoking pile of cardboard and plastic and whatever else they make new houses out of these days, steaming in the rain. construction had finished the day before, the bulider did a walkthrough, and some rags with chemicals spontaneously combusted and fucked everything. luckily no one was in the place at the time. the owner was obviously completely in a state of shock...
it reminded me of x-mas day back when i was a kid and i woke up to see this korean family's house down the street melt into the snow, black as coal. two children were left inside. there were lights on the tree in the yard. the snow looked like gravel.
