i went to see neil young play at the garden last night. he said, "let's just hope this is always called Madison Square Garden, and not the USA Network Pavillion someday."

he played with crazy horse, but they did the entire soon-to-be-released multimedia concept opera-like album called "Greendale". It was brilliant, and neil slowly wins you over into utter wonder about this mythical little california town and it's townsfolk. complete with the townsfolk wandering around and going through their lives onstage, and onscreen behind the band. they lipsynched to neil's voice and lyrics, sometimes saying "look at that guy singin' over there. he looks like he's been doing this for a long time. i wonder if he hasn't said eveything he knows already"...poking fun of himself as he's singing it. the creations commenting upon the artist.....

i love that he's still doing brave new material, instead of just playing the same old stuff like other bands that were young when he was young.

of course he ended the night with some of the older crazy horse stuff, which was cool, too.

but my favorite moment of the night was when he sat down alone, onstage, out front of grandpa's house and sang on his old martin tuned way down low so that the bass was buzzin', singing up high:

"someday, you will find what you're looking for.
someday you will find everything you're looking for"

just the beauty, fear, and heavy potential of the universe in those lines floored me for the rest of the evening.

or maybe i think too much.
