manager wanted me to play a solo acoustic show tomorrow to open for 2 of his bands. too last minute...i already have tickets to see a show tommorow nite with a freind of mine, Arrica who's in town from Cali. We're seeing evan dando. yup. maybe a little corny, but Arrica and I saw him a few years ago in the denoument of his cracksmoking phase doing a solo acoustic set at McCabe's guitar shop in Santa Monica, and we need a followup.
It was the weirdest fucking show I've ever seen. He had his acoustic guitar going through some old stompbox and every now and then, he'd step on it during a chorus and it was literally like white noise.
Then, later in the show, theres some weird commotion thats coming from outside by the fire exit doors that lead into the alley. Evan stops in the middle of a song and hears it too. He jumps off the little stage and kicks open the doors. There in the alley, theres a little boom box. Some one set it up and left it, playing the Lemonheads covering "Mrs. Robinson" at full blast. Dando picks the boom box over his head and smashes it on the concrete, destroying it, pieces flying every where. Then, without skipping a beat, he hops back on stage and finishes his song.
Later in the show, he pours a beer all over himself and does a cartwheel and leaves????
My friend Arrica was in the studio when he recorded "Car Button Cloth". She said he'd sit down in a chair while playing and singing into a mic, with a huge framed painting or photo of Rick James set up in front of him.
So I gotta see this show.
Besides my guitar hero Chris Brokaw from Come, Codeine, and Brokeback is playing guitar for him.
