Down Hill From Here...

Opening night was a huge success. Of course it was a heavily comped event. Like the canucks playing a home game. With a friendly audience that cheered at all the right points. ( But, for the last few quick scenes, which are in Les Mis) for a musical.. very dramatic and action packed. The crowd was weirdly silent.

Then, It was the last scene... end of act one, "One More Day" when all the major characters end up on stage singing against each other, and eventually in joint unison. While the Student protesters march and waive a big red banner. Ending that act while, setting the tone for act two's big barricade scene and finale. ( Here's the broadway version.... from 87... which will help explain the big hair action )

Ours... very similar... only on a smaller stage and to a theatre of 630 brought the house down...

Up in the dome purch where myself and Mark, the spot ops, run the big lights. The cheering was so loud and energetic that the crowds ovation below us in the orchestra seating shook the dome. Backstage, during the break the cast were in shock over the ovation. Out in the lobby it was all nuts with people who were totally into it. 25 minutes later when we finally started act 2, the audience erupted again as the huge projection of cosette faded out and the show continued.

After an opening night party that was probably the busiest I've seen an opening night for years ( The last few musicals have been revivials where the spirit has been far more subdued ) ... Stage-management even stayed... which is saying alot.

We found ourselves all smiling at each other, the next day, like we all shared a neat secret.
