I hope he's gonna be fine. I'm chuffed for you that the vets offered surgery. I've lost two mice and a hamster because the vet said they were too small to operate on. Maybe I should change vets!

it's wonderful that you care enough to take your rat for surgery. I don't know anybody else who'd ever go the distance for such a small animal. People always seem to think that an animals size diminishes its worth as a living thing. We had a gerbil go for surgery once a long time ago... But i don't recall how that ended.
We had so many gerbils and hamsters come and go... Animal captivity is such a sad concept.
