anybody else ever wonder what it would be like if Dwight D. Eisenhower roamed the earth as a zombie who, like, solves crimes?

just wondering.

happy valentine's day, y'all.

good story for those of you without much to do tonight, (or anytime, it's one of my favorite stories):
The Old Chevalier, by Isak Dinesen (from Seven Gothic Tales.)
tororo:
Ummmm.... good old Isak Dinesen. I first noticed that this story whose english title is The Old Chevalier in entitled, in french, le vieux chevalier errant...
Does it mean that chevalier, in english, is usual for "knight errant"? I t seems the same mechanics are at work as in this french translation of "girl" by "showgirl"...

When grabbing the old volume on the shelter, I first opened it on the preface's page... I hope you'll be pleased reading that Marcel Schneider, author of this preface, wrote:
"I know a young man for which Seven Gothic Tales is a livre de chevet; he doesn't make his mind about important decisions without opening this book randomly, as it was once used with the Bible, in order to find an inspired answer".
tororo:
Of course my copy of Seven Gothic Tales is a french one...I bet I would find interesting to read the english version: the genuine original version apparently, as I have read that the books Karen Blixen signed with the name Isak Dinesen were written by her directly in English, the ones she wrote in Danish having been first published under her real name...
It gives me an idea; so, learning some french is on your to-do list.?
For a start, let's do a little French translation exercise.
.... if you find out from which of the Seven Gothic Tales it is, it could help....

I think, after months of denial & a couple weeks of fumbling, I've finally gotten the hang of the "F" chord on the guitar.

(& for those who got it "like, right off the bat...what's the big deal?" --well, good for you. bravo.)

now for "C minor"--urg.

when I was back in NYC, it felt like I'd never left, & the time spent in the grubby little backwater that I call home was a strange dream that I (eventually) woke up from. now that I'm back, & have been back to work at the prison for a few days, the trip seems similiarly ethereal.

anyway:

spent a good chunk of quality time...

The War Prayer
by Mark Twain
It was a time of great and exalting excitement. The country was up in arms, the war was on, in every breast burned the holy fire of patriotism; the drums were beating, the bands playing, the toy pistols popping, the bunched firecrackers hissing and sputtering; on every hand and far...

8 more days until NYC.

my itinerary is pretty much what it usually is on a trip--namely: get there. spend a good chunk of time just kinda wandering around, spend a lot more money than I intended to, come home.

I've tended, in the past, to spend a goodly amount of time in bookstores & bars, & I'm hoping this'll be a bit different, but...

an article from the local paper concerning an incident at the place where I work (the two-week lag between incident & story is pretty usual for this town)

(certain identifying details have been obscured. by me. so ha.)

(also, I am not, to quote Mr. Dave Barry, making this up.)

(also, the hamfisted & often incoherent prose of said periodical has been retained as printed):...
