gosh, I guess I'm at war.

I don't know how I feel about that.
sort of a kind of bewildered numb nothing, I guess, which I suppose is better than having "shock & awe" raining down in my neighborhood. & I've sacrificed some t.v. shows of things blowing up for coverage from Iraq of things on t.v. blowing up.

(& please, those of you who don't trust the government as I do, don't confuse "shock & awe:" for "blitzkrieg"--blitzkrieg was a method used by the Nazis for overwhelming an area being attacked with relentless & superior firepower in an efffort to demoralize the populace & destrot the infrastructure & kill whoever might be around for the killin'. "shock & awe" is TOTALLY different.)

one of the local casinos has taken a quarter-page ad in the paper decorated with stars&stripe bunting announcing that it is a "public service message" & that "until further notice" french fries & french onion soup will be known as "freedom" fries & "freedom" onion soup.

(for those that can't be bothered to keep up with current events, this is in reference to the fact that the French Government has, in the past couple of years, used the "war on terrorism" as an excuse to imprison hundreds without legal representation, create a branch of government for the purpose of gathering information on citizens & guests, keep hundreds more offshore in legal & martial limbo as "unlawful combatants", place gag orders on librarians regarding who might be reading what, &....
sorry, got a bit confused there. apparently the renaming of that quintessencial Gallic dish, the fry, is in reference to Chiracs vocal opposition of our "pre-emptive strike" (such a coy term, no?) on Iraq for reasons that seem dubious at best, & at worst....

anyway, the casino in question can "freedom" kiss my ass...

I don't know what to say. we've unloaded thousands of cutting-edge, state of the art missiles & bombs in an effort to stamp out the scourge of (the potential for) ":weapons of mass destruction".
(& it seems a little strange to me that the first Gulf War, the way that I understand it, was fought because Hussein attacked a much weaker narion in the name of Empire...)
(no, I take that back, it doesn't seem strange. it's business as usual with us humans.)

& the topics of conversation around town & at work have been "have you been watching the war? isn't it great?" & "did you hear what that Dixie Chick said? "

-----

to shift gears, I've actually had a great week. some friends came for Spring Break (one from UNR & one from UW Madison) . more on this later, eh?
tororo:
Yummmmm!!
Myrrh on my journal page!
Freedom fries on yours!
.... you said it... business as usual with us humans....
..."and I speak to myself... it's a wonderful world"....

... yes! yes! I read (and re-read) Borges's "imaginary beings" (there are two versions of it, the second copiously augmented...) ... of course it was the trick question " how the heck could I mix five pounds of myrrh in that story?" that convoked memories of the book and made the phoenix to appear.
Yes again, the quote you made is from this book. I translated to English, from a French edition of Herodotus, a text that's supposedly the same that's quoted by Borges... the diffrences offer another illustration of Lewis carroll's Transmitting of Knowledge Paradox.

Glad to read the news are good!

Now I'll quote Morgan: "Hurray for Spring Break!"
