just got a violin I ordered on ebay last week--it's about as cheap as a violin can be (30 bucks, including case, bow, rosin & little yellow square of rosin cloth) & weighs about as much as a deck of cards (& has about the same tone)
I bought it for a Christmas present for the Partner & it should be a pretty good beginner in thatm when I play it, it sounds pretty much like what I'd expect a violin played by someone who'd never touched one before (or, say, Jack Benny) should sound like.
it just seems like a violin is one of those things that you should have in the house (like smoke bombs, a rhyming dictionary, a couple rolls of nickels, a space heater, a bag of psychadelic mushrooms, or a box of fingerpaints)--you'd be surprised how useful they can be...

Wow, I haven't played my viola in, like, forever. Maybe I should do that. Hmm.
