got some--well, KIND OF good news that came out of a really rotten situation...
yesterday I babysat for my little niece & nephew for a couple of hours (they love me, I'm the coolest uncle ever)...she's two-&-a-half & he's a little over 5. I was mailing off a package to my partner for her birthday & had them scribble a few pictures to slide in & then they hauled arm-loads of toys onto the front lawn & they played while I wrote her a letter & rinsed off their apples when they dropped them. (especially little neice, who kept dropping hers partly because it was a big apple & she has little hands, & partly so she could run up "Dahvin! Rinse it! Please!")(she can't quite pronounce "Ratsonjulia", yet)
their dad (my bro-in-law) came home & I got the package in the mail right before the post office closed.
came home, dicked around on the internet for a bit--went to lay down a little while before graveyard. had my eyes closed maybe 10 minutes when my sister called--
come pick me up.
little neice was in the emergency room.
(my sister works at the prison as well, as does my bro-in-law. we're all correctional officers--it's pretty much the only job in town that pays above minimum wage.)
the fuel-pump on my sister's Rodeo had died a week or so earlier so we've been shuffling vehicles & rides until it Gets Fixed.
little neice was bleeding from a gash in her scalp maybe an inch& a half long & another in her cheek right below the eye.
what happened?
still not sure. they were playing out in the backyard with their two basset hounds, bro-in-law had gone to answer the phone. little nephew came in saying that [little neice] was bleeding, & the dogs did it.
she got fifteen staples in her scalp, & stitches in her cheek.
(we made nervous jokes about it saving a lot of money on a Halloween costume.)
did the dog bite her? possibly. probably not (it's a freakin BASSET HOUND. they slobber--a LOT, they lick.)
did...maybe...little nephew have something to do with it?
we didn't want to think about this but it crossed all of our minds.
(sister & bro-in-law have been seperated for a few months now, & there's been talk of divorce--that's NEVER an easy thing on kids, & he's been acting out a bit, becoming more agressive.)
there was talk that maybe the dogs would have to be put to sleep...
anyway--the kinda good news that came out of this--the cops came over & made a report. bro-in-law searched the backyard...they're thinking that what might've probably happened was that she was playing with or near the dogs, dropped her apple (AGAIN!) they went for it & knocked her into something.
I talked to my Senior Officer at work last night & she said that she'd probably be able to take both of 'em in (the dogs, not the kids)--she's kind & has a much bigger yard, so I think it might be better for them anyway.
little neice is fine although she'll look like the cutest frankensteins monster for a couple of weeks, & might have a little scar that she'll have a few years to come up with a cool story to explain.
--------
a question:
sister & bro-in-law were married on Halloween. do I get them a present for their anniversary, seeing as how they're splitting (split)?

I would say....no gift?
