it'a about a 20 minute drive from where I work to my house, a stretch of desert that, at 5 in the morning is pitch black with one little dim-lit cluster of houses about midway.
about half an hour ago, coming home, dog-tired, thinking about the beer that was waiting for me at home & wondering about a weird streak of light that had fallen out of the black a few moments before that was probably just a reflection of a headlight somewhere behind me, maybe five mule deer were right on the road in front of me.
I hit the brakes, saw for a second one of them tumbling thru the windshield, but instead hit one of them on the hindquarters.
I'm not sure how hard. she limped away on three legs.
I was on a blind corner, no place to pull over, aimed my headlights in the direction she'd gone, but she was off limping thru the sagebrush, faster on three legs than I would be on two, & what could I do if I caught up with her? administer first aid?
drove the rest of the way home. checked the front of the car. there was a dent, but I honestly can't remember if it was there already or not.
called the police, thinking that maybe animal control or the department of wildlife would do something, but the dispatcher told me it was mainly an insurance matter...was there damage to the car or wasn't there?
I'm wondering, Did she walk it off after a few yards or is she dying in a ditch somewhere?
what the fuck do I do?

a couple of years ago I went to visit a friend. I was told by her housemate that she was in the back bedroom.
talking to her, she asked if I was nervous at all about coming into her house.
no, I said, why? should I be?
we retraced my steps to the front door. there was blood everywhere. her dog had gotten into a particularly grisly fight & had come into the house, getting it all over the place.
I just don't notice things, sometimes--most of the time...
