ah, technology...

it can make our lives easier, it can bring people from far-flung corners of the globe together to exchange ideas, hopes, fears (& occassionally naked pictures of each other)--it can keep a heart beating, show glimpses of a child forming in a womb, allow us to play solitaire for hours without a deck of cards, etc.

it can also be an absolute pain in the ass (I mean in the figurative sense, altho I HAVE heard strange stories of experimentation with adult novelties gone horribly awry)--

as I've mentioned, I am, in concert with my sister, working on purchasing a headstone for our mother, who passed away several months ago. we live in a fairly rural area & could pick something out of a catalogue, but I at least want to SEE the thing first--I like to handle something before I consider buying it, whether it's jeans or gardening implements or produce or a wallsafe. or a headstone.

so I went to SLC last week & spent the better part of a day walking all over town in a miserable film of high-humidity oozing sweat & eventually found an actual place with actual stones, talked to the guy running it, told him what we were looking for, looked at what he had, & went back a couple of hours later with my digital camera & took about 2 dozen photos of likely candidates that I & my sister would go thru together when I got back.

(I thought this was rather clever of me. & it was. except.)

except the ease with which a digital camera allows you (or, in this case, me) to take oodles of pictures & upload them swiftly & effortlessly to the computer also makes it rather easy to swiftly & effortlessly obliterate said images in a fraction of a second without so much as a sizzle or wisp of smoke.

which is what I did. (it'd been a while since I'd used the camera & I'd forgotten that there were options for "clear camera & load images" & "clear camera"--& they were VERY close together. & I was tired. & I'm an idiot.)

when I realized what I did I may have given utterance to a certain earthy Anglo-Saxon noun that Tororo might have heard. I'm pretty sure the neighbors did--& it may or may not have been a coincedence that a car alarm a block& a half away went off at that moment. I just don't know.

so my sister came over later in the day & I tried to describe the stones that I could recall as being likely candidates using interpretive dance & comparisons with various roles that Keanu Reeves has attempted to act, but that just didn't do it.

urg.

I'm tempted to put an item on the Boards to see if someone in the SLC area with a digicam would be willing to go over & snap a few shots in exchange for, say, 20 bucks, but I'm not sure if that type of thing's allowed.

ah well, life goes on.

What day was it? I remember having been awakened at some ungodly hour three days ago by some strange sound I have been unable to identify so far.... but I can't tell for sure....
