after yesterday's scare I made sure that the cat in question was firmly inside the house & the windows closed.
& when I came home this morning she was right there on the front step waiting for me--I thought at first that someone had been in the house while I was at work (I moved into this place about 2 years ago & have never once locked the door. I'm wierd that way.) but figured out that she'd worked at one of the windows I'd left open a crack. so much for that.
at the risk of anthropomorphising (especially since I dislike using such big words so early in the morning, before I've had my coffee), it seems she has this "thing" about seeing me off when I drive off to work & has been running up to meet the car when I approach in the morning, which is why I kind of hold my breath when I come over the hill that approaches my house, afraid I'll see what I saw yesterday.)
she's kind of a wierd cat, Marble--a good friend of mine had her from when she was a kitten until she was about 9, when it turned out that her son was allergic to her. I talked my grandmother into adopting her &, after a few days where she kept trying to go back to my friend's house, she & my grandmother became inseperable, but she'd have nothing to do with the other cats in the house & most people. my grandmother was in pretty poor health & spent most of the time either on the couch or in bed & Marble was invariably cuddled up against her.
when my grandmother passed away almost 2 years ago I took on Marble & two of my grandmothers other cats & Marble seems to have no intention of changing her long-standing prejudice against other cats (dogs she seems to be cool with, in that when they have been in the house she'll rarely deign to acknowledge their existence) & there seems to be an uneasy truce in which she won't be in the same room with the other cats (who get along just fine) & when I feed them she'll hang back until I move her bowl far enough away from the others.
not much of a point to all this, except to say that I'm really glad she's okay.

So, unless Marble is hearing-impaired.... I wouldn't find it surprising if she's able to identify your car from the specific noise its motor does, and shows up on the roadside only when it's yours that's approaching.
