random thing:
since the build-up to the War in Iraq I've been getting most of my news from the British Press which, to me, seems a bit less sycophantic, plus the slightly different "flavour" of English will often draw my attention to something I might otherwise slide over.
anyway, last night I read an article that led me to believe that William S. Burroughs was alive & well & writing "telly" reviews for the Manchester Guardian, when a piece about a "COPS"-style show on the "beeb" (where a camera crew follows a team of fire-fighters & arson investigators) mentioned that about half of the house-fires in London are started by "neglected fags".
indeed.

the man was always one of my heroes, & remains so.
(it's wierd--a day or 2 ago an appearance he made on the Tonight Show popped into my head, apropos of nothing, where he was telling a story about reading "Snow White" to his granddaughter & when he got to the part where the Wicked Stepmother was going to give the poisoned apple to S.W.: "I just couldn't tell her that... that she was going to poison her own stepdaughter...so I said that she hit her in the ass with a bat. For months afterward, no matter what anybody asked her [the granddaughter] her answer was always hit-er-in-the-ass-with-a-bat-hit-er-in-the-ass-with-a-bat"--it's not that funny in print, but that voice & manner of his had me wetting my pants)
