Well now that was a hell of a rant. Getting back to business as usual and hopefully I am not set back to much, this may end up working in my favor all around so I'm far from worried.

i liked the silvery grey crayon the best. i drew hippos over and over and over.
no markers for me. me markers = marked up child.
now i use multi colored sharpies for everything. stain away.
