In Defense of Suicide
I was curious, a few days ago, about those who may have tried to commit suicide and failed. I was interested in what their lives would be like afterward. Was it cathartic? Did they try again later? Was it a wake-up call to themselves or those around them?
What I found, was that the term 'suicide survivor' does not actually refer to those who attempted and failed suicide. It refers to friends or family of someone who succeeded in committing suicide.
Fascinating.
As I read the sites, though, I kept thinking 'what horse shit'. There are two broad buckets into which people wanting to commit suicide fall into. First, they want to send a message to someone. Second, because they simply want out.
The first is hard to defend - seems like kind of a strange message to send, but I'm surprised at how often it happens.
The second is hard not to defend. If someone wants out, who are you or I to make them stay? No one asked for this life - no one came to you or I and said 'hey, you want to be born? I got a great idea - lets make you a (guy / girl), put you in this world...' blah blah blah. The truth is, we were dumped here - every one of us. But, no one says you have to stay, right? If someone wants to check-out, why can't they?
I also read about the 'selfishness' of the person committing suicide. Fuck that, really. If you are asking someone to stay in a situation they see as intolerable just so you can have them around, whose being selfish?
My final thoughts are that if a friend or family member is in a great deal of pain, and they'd rather check out than endure it any longer, then you gotta let em go. Maybe you'll see them again.....
