For all the hustle, this has been an extraordinary summer full of great joy and some pretty intense sadness. Ive been a bit depressed this last week after breaking up with my girl, but this weekend was all about joy, Im happy to report.

Friday night I hosted a little party for friends. I set up the ping pong table and outdoor speakers in my back yard, and spent most of the day sloooooowly roasting two chickens and lots of vegetables in my outdoor grill and smoke box. When friends started to arrive and the wine/beer/smoke started to flow, I had such a sense of euphoria just being in the moment with them and laughing together.

On Saturday, I went up north of Seattle to this place called the Smoke Farm. It is a sprawling artists community that lies along the banks of the Stillaguamish River, and this weekend featured multiple installations of varying kinds. Imagine strolling through cedar groves and finding a group of forest dryads performing aerial on a 3-rope apparatus (these were friends of mine). Now imagine walking through a meadow of tall grass and discovering a garden of suspended glass orbs glistening in the sun and beyond that a giant birds nest full golden, beach ball-sized, fuzzy, eggs! All along the trail were perfectly placed groups of low-fi musicians, glass artists, poets, sculptures, etc, etc. It was just surreal. The party and HUGE bonfire afterwards were pretty fantastic, too.

And then Sunday came along. Typically I like this day to be fluid and relaxed, but last night I went with friends to see Elvis Costello. His opening band was the Lovell sisters and their first song was a bluegrass version of a Massive Attack song. Im in love. Elvis played a very long set with a strong Country and Western vibe (in a good way), followed by a lengthy encore. He even rearranged a lot of his classics. I just have to say that this dude has improved with ageand thats saying something.

So for all the dancing this weekend, Im a bit tired! Even so, I wouldnt change a thing. Its been brilliant.
