Shamelessly Flogging my Shit Part II: The Home Video Edition!
As some of you may know (probably due to my brazen self-promotion), last year a film I Executive Produced, Paris je t'aime, had its theatrical release in North America. For anyone interested in seeing it, or who saw and liked it, Paris je t'aime hits dvd on November 13th, and should be available via amazon, netflix, or any local video store.
The film was produced by Claudie Ossard (Amelie, City of Lost Children), and is an anthology of short films set in disparate neighborhoods of Paris, each segment directed by a different director. The movie includes segments by the Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, Wes Craven, Alfonso Cuaron and Alexander Payne; it stars, among many others, Natalie Portman, Willem Dafoe, Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Elijah Wood, Nick Nolte, Bob Hoskins and Gena Rowlands. What the hell I'm doing alongside names like that I'll never know but rest assured that my wisest action was essentially getting out of the way of all that talent to let them do their thing.
For those who care about such things, Paris je t'aime premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, opening the Un Certain Regard selection. Rotten Tomatoes puts it at 85% positive reviews, Ebert and Roeper picked it as one of the best films of the year, USA Today says "It's hard not to love," and Entertainment Weekly calls it "blithe, worldly and enchanting."
Yeesh. I feel dirty from the self-love fest. Apologies. Perhaps it's the fact that right now the American Film Market industry convention is going on here in Santa Monica, AFI Film Fest is next week, and the Writer's Guild strike is looming, set to begin tomorrow, so I'm endlessly reminded that I live in a company town
