Going to visit the grave of my first ancestor to come to the U.S., John Moss, who came to New Haven in 1639 and helped found the town of Wallingford. Michelle & I actually were in the graveyard Friday but it was pouring rain and we didn't find it.
There's basically two landmarks pertaining to John Moss. His grave and the "rock lot," where he made his first shelter against a big rock. In August 2006 we looked for John's headstone in this church graveyard where dozens of Mosses are buried, but it wasn't there. It's been a veritable odyssey finding the rock lot too. Back then we went to the intersection where it was supposed to be but didn't see it.
On Friday we knocked on the door of this house at that intersection and this really nice old lady invited us in.
Her name's Ethel Prentice, she was born in 1910. One of her ancestors married a Moss, and now she lives in this house on the property which is a lot older than it looks, and owns the "rock lot." We asked if it was okay to check out the rock and videotape, and she said fine, you can't miss it.
But we still couldn't find any rock. It could be it's not that visible.
Anyway, we're going again, and with any luck we'll get to the grave and the rock then.
