I just heard one of the most horrifying things I've ever heard in my whole life. I was sitting at the kitchen table deciding what classes to take at PCC next quarter, while half-listening to KBOO's program about poverty and homelessness, Hole in the Bucket. They were talking about some of the heinous murders of homeless people recently. What made me stop what I was doing and just sit for several minutes in utter shock was the story of a woman, I didn't catch in what city (Denver?), who deliberately ran into a homeless man with her car. He was thrown into her windshield. She then drove the car into her garage and left it there, WITH THE MAN STILL IN THE WINDSHIELD, and LEFT HIM THERE FOR TWO DAYS, IGNORING HIS CRIES FOR HELP AS HE SLOWLY BLED TO DEATH.

I thought I was unshockable, but this has left me stunned and speechless. I have never heard of such barbaric cruelty, in the 21st century, in the supposedly civilized United States of America. I cannot wrap my mind around this. What is the matter with us? What has happened? Has there been such a complete and utter disconnect from the rest of humanity - hell, from the rest of all creation - that we are unable to see past the face we see in the mirror? Has that face become all that matters to us? Are we incapable of seeing any other faces? Me me me. It's all about me. My way or the highway. What's in it for me? What can he/she/it do for me? Well let me clue you in on something, Jack. There IS no "me." There is only "us." We are all in this TOGETHER!!!! If we don't get our shit together, the human race is DOOMED!!!

I trust I've made my point. I need some quiet time now.
