...and so http://greylopht.ath.cx/websites/radd/art/evil.jpg is rejected from Elfwood on the grounds that it's not sci-fi enough. Granted, by itself it looks more steam-punkish than anything, but Elfwood doesn't have a steam-punk section. The thing that irks me is that in the rejection notice I was told that I could re-submit it if it stated that it was a part of a sci-fi storyline or something, but I'd already stated in the description that it was from the same story as all my other pictures filled with robots and alines and whatnot! see theres the annoying thing about working in commercial art. you cant do what you want alot of the time. sometimes i just wanna say fuck it and be a fine artist so i can do whatever i want and not have to deal with all the stress of being an illustrator and making art work that fits into certain standards that an art director specifies. but i never seriously consider it. i wouldnt be happy without the challenge of making a piece that has tells a story and i like making characters. (i really love your characters that i have seen btw- they have tons of personality.) anyways, i know that i will get my work rejected tons and tons of times once i start freelancing and ill probally cry every time but seriously if i dont get rejection or criticism i get too comfortable with my work and then it doesnt improve. so i need that aspect of commercial art to encourage me to keep working. alot of people dont give illustration the respect it deserves- but those people obviously dont understand the work that goes into it. and like i said alot of times i just want to quit and do something simple and easy but then i wouldnt be satisfied. besides theres no better feeling than a job well done.
