And as for the questions on some finnish things you wrote ages ago (sorry, I forgot to reply way back then), dunno how many words we've for snow/lakes/water, but there are several, and this is a rather nice example of it ( http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumi the finnish wikipedia entry on snow that has some of the words used to describe different types of snow).
No idea about how many months there's snow in Finland, as it varies alot depending on the location. Here in Helsinki it's more like 3 or so months of proper snow (january-march usually), 4 months of generally crappy weather and the rest of the year is pretty nice and temperate.
As for the ortography, I believe it developed mostly in here, as it's very different from that of the neighbouring countries, and the current form of it is relatively recent (from the 16th century unless I'm totally mistaken).
