Movie Review
Ok, I have always had quite the crush on Elisha Cuthbert from TV's 24. She is just so adorable. Well know I have a new reason to be not so secretley in love with her. The Girl Next Door is the new gem from the director of the Rob Schnider master piece "The Animal". Ok so the Animal was a shitty, shitty movie that should never have been made, but In mine own oppinion Luke Greenfield has struck gold with The Girl Next Door.
To be honest the writing staff on this movie really isn't anything to write home about either, pardon the pun. With movies like My Babies Daddy, and Saving Ryan's Privates under their belt you should expect nothing from them but shit. It truly makes me believe that when the right cast comes together they just click, and they can make something great, out of nothing. I have a hard time believing this script was nothing though.
Emile Hirsch plays Matthew Kidman, an over acheiver who someday wants to be president, who's life is turned upside down when the amazing Elisha Cuthbert, who plays Danielle, moves in next door. He jumps through her hoops, and stumbles along the way.
I felt bad for him when he was screwing up, and when I knew he was about to screw up, I just sat in my chair and cringed. I just wanted him to get the girl. The character had the quality where you could feel yourself in his shoes, and you felt yourself living vicariously through him. You could also see why he fell so head over heels for Cuthbert's character. When he finds out her secret porn past that she has tried to leave behind her, not only is his life turned upside down, but it is shaken all to hell.
The cast is great, with Timothy Olyphant of HBO's new series Deadwood playing Kelly, a very crooked, yet very funny porn producer. The movie reminds me a lot of Tom Cruise's Risky Buisiness where an over acheiver falls for a hooker, except funnier. This is a movie that will remind you that if you want something bad enough, you should fight for it,... is the juice worth the squeeze. You can't have everything, and sometimes, things have to be sacrificed in order to get what is really important.
Don't get me wrong, this is not the most well made movie I have ever seen, there are problems with a few things, like how did a certain video get edited? I won't say anymore about that, you have to see the movie.
Don't go into it looking to see Oliver Stone, go into it looking to have a good time. I was very disapointed that this movie wasn't even in the top 5. I hope word of mouth will get around, because the juice is worth the squeeze.
Score: 8 (of ten)
