i've been a domestic li'l pygmy lately. baking 2 loaves of bread every day (no bread machine for me!), and every meal from scratch, of course, as usual. looking through seed catalogs, planning the garden. going to get a rain barrel soon to attatch to the gutters. going to go to the habitat for humanity store to get some reclaimed windows to make some cold frames. i've got my eye on a meyer lemon tree for inside. been hanging paintings, arranging furniture. reading a lot-- now it's jose saramago's blindness. gonna make a batch of mead once my honey gets here. also made really tasty and addictive sesame-honey candies. going to try my hand at curing some bacon, soon, hopefully. and of course i made a huge bucket of sauerkraut-- gonna make some sauerkraut-caraway rye bread tomorrow. tonight it's asiago, pinenut, and rosemary foccacia. it's rising right now. yesterday it was honey, pecan and gorgonzola foccacia and honey whole-wheat bread. did i mention i really like honey? it's also how i sweeten my coffee. today i also put some orange zest in the french press with the coffee-- yum. soon i'll ce saving the grounds to sprinkle on the carrot rows.
i also ordered a couple different sourdough cultures to experiment with. one of which is described as: "The bakery where this sourdough was found dated straight back to antiquity and was literally in the shadow of the pyramids. This culture could be the progeny of the one that made man's first bread and is similar to the one we used to recreate that first bread in Egypt for the National Geographic." who woulda thought a gal could get so excited about some yeast and lactobacilli?

having a kitchen that's bigger than a dozen square feet is a huge relief, i've got all this pent-up energy for doing domestic things. i'm even more eager to start gardening. 3 years in an apartment with no garden was hell for me, especially as someone who really loves food. before long, my uniform's going to be a pair of overalls and a straw hat. biggrin
