The popularity of weblogs (blogs') is booming. All of a sudden it's cool to keep a journal/diary, but not in the classic sense of it being a personal hobby. It's definately a public event for some people.

I have one (this can most definately be counted as a blog), most likely anyone who reads this has one (or two, or three...). Add to this the countless people who actively contribute to all the blogging communities scattered throughout the internet.

I find it funny that in a society obsessed with privacy (but being ruthlessly taken advantage of based on those same tenets they hold most dear) people would be so active in these highly public communities.

Just an observation.

There is a difference between having your privacy violated by 'big brother' or whoever it may be, and having your daily events posted, willingly, by you, on an internet community. Here, you only tell what you want, when you want, and you rarely share the intimate details about your life. You just pass on some things that you thought were fun or interesting.
If we were/are constantly being watched, then the voluntary element is removed, and instead of being fun, it becomes invasive. You don't have to be obsessed with privacy to find that prospect very frightening.

An astute observation. I HATE journals....I esp hate people who say that they journal...it's not a bleeding verb! I found it offensive that I was expected to submit journals in school...I had no desire for my profs to share in my thoughts and feelings. How dare they demand that I emote on paper. I get a kick outta this recent news brief 'bout the Osbourne son in rehab. Here is a family that lives on camera demanding that the media respect their privacy...
