wow- i really am a music snob.
i'm talkin' about mp3's now, and my attitude about them. on the one hand, it IS a good deal to be able to get so much music more easily...i know that many members have mentioned that they wouldn't have been exposed to so many different genres and artists if it wasn't for downloading mp3's. on the otherhand- it kind of makes it TOO easy, and i guess i kind of resent that. you don't have to work for it anymore. no more searching for months and months for that rare 7" import and then paying a lot of money for it when you find it. the thrill of the hunt is gone. also...and i hate that i'm even saying this...it also means that just ANYONE can have access to unknown/rare songs...not necessarily to those who really appreciate music.
in the early 90's, there was a canadian hip-hop band known as The Dream Warriors, which were fairly popular amongst alternative kiddies such as myself. their most popular song sampled Quincy Jones' "Soul Bossanova." at the time, the song 'soul bossanova' was REALLY hard to find. i searched for it for a long time, then i finally found it on a japanese re-release of the quincy jones' album 'quincy plays for pussycats.' i was sooo happy that i finally had that song in my posession! i played it on my show on kalx, where, even though they have the 3rd largest music library in cali, they didn't have a copy of the song. everyone was so impressed that i had it. i was 'cool.' then, austin powers came out. when i first saw that soul bossanova intro, i was so exited to see it, and i thought it was cool that, finally, that song would be easy to find [b/c of the soundtrack release]. my exitement soon turned to disappointment, however, after EVERYONE had a copy of that song- not just the music collecting elite. suddenly, it became trite to play that song on my music show, or in a club.
in otherwords, i was no longer special.
i'm sure there are other collector-types [not necessarily music collectors] who have felt this way before. i hate admitting that i am such a snob, but i am=/
