So about them video games. I just bought a 512 stick for my PSP. I was holding out for a gig but I have my reasons. Mostly to funnel funds into an X-box 360.

I don't get Mtv and even if I did I would have missed the 360's infomercial on purpose but the info from its fall out is plentiful. Essentially you can go to xbox.com to get the skinny but here's the quick facts (some of which were told to me from a company e-mail):

3 custom IBM Power PC 3.2 GHz cores that run simultaneously, 500 MHz ATI video card (your current box is running 320 Hz Nvidia if I'm not mistaken), 720 and 1080 HD support, detachable and upgradeable 20 gig hard drive, wireless controllers out of the box, etc, etc, etc.

What does all this mean? To be quite honest I don't know all the ins and outs (I could tell you about the cholinergic hypothesis of geriatric memory dysfunction though). I know enough to give a sales pitch. Problem with sales pitches is that you start selling the product to yourself.

Now here's the weak sauce part: No word as of yet on backwards compatibility. Why would Microsoft do this? Well they wouldn't but since ATI is making their new card and Nvidia made the old one there is some chest beating over whether or not Nvidia will give the essential go ahead to backwards compatibility. Honestly, Microsoft, much like nature, always finds a way. Count on backwards compatibility.

Also Perfect Dark 0 looks to be the main launch title. Frankly, it doesn't look as good as a next generation game should, but then again I don't have much to base this assumption on. To me, it looks like the X-box (norm.) could handle this game. It would be nice if the powers that be hold back the Half-Life 2 port till the 360 hits (hint fucking hint). Half-Life 2 most certainly could use full advantage of the hardware. Lets hope brighter heads prevail.

Two final thoughts: Everything that I am writing here is about as reliable as any info you might find hurriedly scrawled on a truck stop bathroom wall ( and I am still waiting for a call back). Until E3 next week, and more importantly until I am holding one in my hands, anything I say or anyone else says doesn't really mean anything.

Second thought: I realize full well that I am doing my small part in rolling the Microsoft behemoth along. I would worry more if it weren't on a down slope anyway.

Honestly, in this case I only care to be informed and to inform on the best purchasing decisions for the next upcoming round of the console wars. I fully plan on giving more posts with more specs and opinions on the other systems. (though I don't know why, there are much more entertaining and credible sources than I). Even so, I am going to go out on a limb here and say that if the Phantom ever hits market, the market will hit it back so hard that I imagine they will sell negative units.

I guess I have delusions of being Tycho. Even so if there is anything you'd like to discuss about the dramatic changes taking place in the world of video games I'd love to discuss and debate.

On a final note I will say this: I don't give a crawling fuck about which celebrities play which games or their opinions on them. I personally don't really like the fact that gaming is becoming the "in" thing. There is a certain feeling about being on the outside that is comfortable. I'm sure many of you know what I am talking about even if you don't want to admit it. Normally I wouldn't care and let this turn of events shift my perceptions but gaming is my bread and butter. Hypothetically, if NOFX ever goes mainstream I think I could deal eventually, but if Paris Hilton ever mentions how much she loves Chrono Trigger I might have to stab her in the heart.

For those of you who made it through to the end of my ramblings here is the special one hundred percent ending:

(PS: I fear for Nintendo. I love them so much but fear their clinging to traditions is counter productive to them making great games. Business wise they'll always be around, but I wonder how many classics they have left in them.)
