I could kill someone right now...
Let's start in my usual fashion - by cutting a long story short. My flatmate hasn't been back at the flat since the last weekend of February. She didn't pay me last month's bills. Numerous e-mails were ignored. I came back after the Easter break (2 weeks off uni, spent at home) and she'd removed her computer, Freeview box and Wii from the flat but left all her other stuff. I sent more e-mails, they were ignored. Then I got a letter at the start of this week saying that our account was in arrears due to non-payment of rent... or more specifically, she hadn't paid her share. STILL no contact. Landlord couldn't contact her either. I started packing up her stuff and left it in crates in her room. Last night, I get a one-line e-mail:
"I'm coming to Liverpool tonight to collect my stuff but not til late."
I was out at the time. I came home late from the pub, saw that e-mail, and checked her room - sure enough, all her shit was gone. NOW we get to the good bit...
I called my landlord today to inform them she had moved out. The woman seemed surprised. She still couldn't get hold of her.
She then asked what I was going to do about the rent.
I told her that I was still paying my share of the rent.
She told me that I need to pay the full rent now.
I told her that no, I did not, as we each had guarantors set up, so they can recover her share of the rent from her guarantor.
She told me it didn't work that way, and that the landlord is out of pocket - "it's not fair on them!"
I asked her what about me? Am I expected to just find another 300 a month?
She told me that in that case, BOTH guarantors will be pursued.
Follow this logic... I pay my 375 share of the 675 rent (larger bedroom) on time, every month, without fail.
My flatmate fails to pay her 300 share of the rent, moves out, tells no-one, doesn't inform the landlord, still has the keys, has left me with a massive debt to the electricity company that we were both paying off, not to mention the fact that this has now doubled my monthly outgoings for bills.
Somehow, my guarantor is equally liable for the money.
I need to smoke.

Take her to small claims court (or whatever the UK equivalent of it is)-- that's jacked up

I don't know how that will work though... I'm not trying to get the money off her, I'm trying to get the landlord/letting agency to get the money off her! Argh.
